All-too-human Mis-takes
Mindfulness practice helps us accept the inherently subjective nature of our cognitive processes and see them clearly for what they are instead of repeating the same pattern of all-too-human misperceptions or mis-takes. Some of our chronic mis-takes may include taking one’s thoughts as reality, taking desires as needs, taking a setback as a failure, taking numbing agents as relaxation, and taking things for granted. Many of these mis-takes may be trivial or inconsequential individually; however, their cumulative effects can be significant enough to create barriers to well-being and achieving personal goals.
When our capacity for mindful awareness (metacognition) is limited, we are bound to repeat the same mental errors and perpetuate unhealthy habits. In this sense, cultivating the inward attention of mindful awareness is the foundation of our health, and this very process of getting acquainted with ourselves is called, self-attunement or intrapersonal attunement. More on this topic later.
Change becomes possible when we wake up from a life-on-autopilot mode. By becoming mindfully aware of how the mind is processing and regulating the flow of information, we start making choices skillfully. In other words, paying attention to the play of our minds self-reflectively in relation to here & now experience helps us recalibrate the mind-brain reciprocity, and in turn, our behavioral responses as well.
